GUANACASTE COAST
Where to Stay on the Guanacaste Coast
The right place to stay depends on what kind of trip you want. Here’s how to think about it.
Pick Your Town First
Each beach town has a different personality. Pick the one that matches your vibe, then find accommodation there.
Flamingo
Resort FeelWhite sand beach, full marina, upscale restaurants. The most developed area. Best for families and couples who want comfort and convenience. Walking distance to fishing charters.
Tamarindo
Beach TownThe social hub. Surf, restaurants, nightlife, everything walkable. More action, more people, more noise. Best for solo travelers, surfers, younger groups who want everything at their doorstep.
Brasilito
AuthenticReal Costa Rican fishing village. Walking distance to Conchal. Cheap food, local vibe, Sunday market. Best for budget travelers and anyone who wants the authentic experience over the polished one.
Potrero
QuietThe calm alternative to Flamingo. Long quiet beach, calmest water on the coast. A few good restaurants but no nightlife. Best for families with young kids and anyone who values peace over convenience.
Types of Accommodation
What works best depends on your group size and budget.
Vacation Rentals / Villas
Best value for families and groups of 4+. Private pools, kitchens, multiple bedrooms. Book on Airbnb or VRBO. The per-person cost drops fast with more people.
Hotels
Tamarindo has the most hotel options. Flamingo has a few boutique spots. No big chain hotels in the immediate area (the Westin is technically in Conchal). Good for couples and solo travelers.
Hostels / Budget
Tamarindo has several good hostels with pools, communal kitchens, and social vibes. Brasilito has budget rooms and guesthouses. Not much in Flamingo or Potrero at the budget level.
Luxury / All-Inclusive
The Westin Reserva Conchal is the main resort option. Las Catalinas has boutique luxury. Several private villas with staff, chef, and concierge services available for $500+/night.
Booking Tips
Book early for December through April. This is peak season. The best rentals fill up 2-3 months ahead. Prices are 30-50% higher than green season.
Green season (May-November) is the deal. Same places, half the price, way fewer crowds. Rain is mostly afternoon showers, mornings are sunny.
Check the cancellation policy. Most Airbnb rentals in Costa Rica have strict cancellation. Look for flexible options if your plans might change.
Ask about golf cart parking. If you’re renting a golf cart (you should), make sure your rental has a covered spot to charge it.
