Costa Rica family vacation in Tamarindo Guanacaste - the crescent Pacific beach at golden hour

A 7-day Costa Rica family vacation in Tamarindo – day by day. Built for groups of 4 to 8 with kids age 4 and up, based out of a private luxury villa with a private chef on call, full concierge handled, and every activity pre-booked. Modeled on the trips we actually run for families on this coast. Adapt it for any age – we also include a separate nap-friendly version below for families with kids under 6.

Why Tamarindo for a Costa Rica family vacation?

Tamarindo on the Pacific Guanacaste coast is 45 minutes from Liberia airport, has the best learn-to-surf beach in Central America (every kid 6+ stands up on day one), an easy mangrove wildlife tour with crocodiles and monkeys, multiple family-friendly restaurants, and walkable beaches. Private 4-5 bedroom villas with pool + chef beat almost every all-inclusive resort on price for a family of 4-6. This itinerary is built around a 7-night stay starting and ending in Liberia.

Day by day

Family Week day 1 - Arrival & settle in
Day 1

Arrival & settle in

Afternoon
Land at Liberia International Airport (LIR). Your pre-arranged transfer is waiting outside arrivals – about 45 minutes to Tamarindo. The golf carts are at the villa, the fridge is stocked with cold drinks and snacks for the kids, the kitchen has a basket of fruit and pastries.
Evening
Welcome dinner. Two options: a casual first night at Maria Bonita on the main strip (kid-friendly Mexican, the guacamole is legendary), or stay in and have a private chef cook the first dinner at the villa – the easier call if anyone is jet-lagged.
Night
A barefoot walk on the beach to decompress. Tamarindo is a sea turtle beach in season (October to February) – ask your concierge about a guided night turtle tour.
Family Week day 2 - Beach day & sunset
Day 2

Beach day & sunset

Morning
Private chef breakfast at the villa – acai bowls, scrambled eggs, fresh tropical fruit, cortado coffee, juice for the kids. Then a golf cart ride to Playa Langosta (5 minutes south) – calmer, family-friendlier waves than Tamarindo main beach, perfect for younger kids.
Midday
Lunch at Langosta Beach Club on the sand. Kids menu, ceviche, frozen drinks for the adults.
Afternoon
Pool time back at the villa – or tide pool exploration on the south end of Langosta. Sunset walk on the beach.
Evening
Sunset cocktails at Pangas Beach Club in Tamarindo while the kids run on the sand. Dinner at El Mercadito – open-air food court so everyone gets something they want.
Family Week day 3 - Wildlife morning & lazy afternoon
Day 3

Wildlife morning & lazy afternoon

Early morning
Tamarindo Estuary mangrove tour by boat – 2 hours – crocodiles, howler monkeys, iguanas, white-faced capuchins, herons. Naturalist guide narrates, kids ride at the front of the boat. The most reliable wildlife experience of the week.
Midday
Back to the villa for lunch (chef can do a casual grilled-chicken-and-quesadilla lunch) and pool time.
Afternoon
Older kids: kids beginner surf lesson (age 6+, group lesson on the main beach, 2 hours, $40-70/kid). Younger kids: pool play or a walk to the butterfly garden.
Evening
Family dinner at Volcano (wood-fired pizza, casual, kid magnet) or Patagonia del Mar (Argentine asado for the steak crowd).
Family Week day 4 - Waterfall day trip
Day 4

Waterfall day trip

Early morning
Leave at 7:30am for Llanos de Cortez waterfall – about an hour northeast. Beat the heat and the bus tours.
Mid-morning
Swim under the falls. Wide curtain into a clear turquoise pool, soft sand at the edges, kids love it. Entry is $7 USD. Bring water shoes and a waterproof phone case.
Lunch
On the way back, stop at La Vecindad in Tamarindo for a casual Tico lunch – rice, beans, plantains, fresh fish, the works.
Afternoon
Pool and cabana day back at the villa. This is the rest-day inside the trip. Optional in-villa massage for the adults while the kids nap or watch a movie.
Evening
Casual dinner in or order from Surf Shack – burgers, smoothies, salads, easy.
Family Week day 5 - Sunset catamaran
Day 5

Sunset catamaran

Morning
Slow morning. Beach, breakfast, walk. Save energy for the afternoon.
Afternoon into evening
The marquee day of the trip. Boat boards at 2pm in Tamarindo or Flamingo. Sail the gold coast, snorkel stop at a sheltered bay (kids 6+ snorkel with mask + life vest), open bar, kids menu and adult menu, sunset from open water on the way back. Dolphins often pace the boat. Three to four hours, family-friendly.
Late evening
Home for showers, casual dinner, early to bed. Big day.
Family Week day 6 - Surf, spa & chef night
Day 6

Surf, spa & chef night

Morning
Kids do a 2-hour group surf lesson on the main beach (age 6+). Parents either join in or get a beachfront morning to themselves.
Midday
Lunch at the villa – leftovers, cold cuts, kids’ favourites.
Afternoon
In-villa massage for the parents while the kids nap or play in the pool. The therapist comes to your villa, brings the table and oils.
Evening
Private chef dinner at the villa. Multi-course meal cooked on your deck – fresh seafood, grilled meats, kids menu in parallel, candles on the table, wine for the adults. The signature night of the trip.
Family Week day 7 - Farewell
Day 7

Farewell

Early morning
One last sunrise on the beach. Cortado on the terrace.
Morning
Final chef breakfast – the kids get pancakes, the adults get the avocado tostada. Pack the swimsuits and shells. Transfer to Liberia airport (LIR) – about 45 minutes.

In-villa massage for parents during kids’ nap window - Costa Rica family vacation

Babies and toddlers run a different schedule – nap windows are sacred, evenings end at 7pm, and the “activity day” is a 90-minute morning outing. We adapt the whole week to the same overall sequence (beach + mangrove + waterfall + catamaran + chef) but slice each day differently.

Sample day structure for young families:

Time Block
7-8am Wake, fruit, cortado on the terrace.
8-10am One short morning outing – mangrove tour, butterfly garden, beach club, or Ponderosa Eco Park. Pick the calmest of the day.
10am-12pm Pool play at the villa. Snack.
12pm Lunch (chef does a kid-friendly spread).
1-3:30pm Nap window protected. Parents: in-villa massage, breathwork, or pool downtime in parallel.
4-5pm Easy afternoon – tide pools, beach walk, gentle pool play.
6pm Bath + bedtime routine.
7pm Kids asleep. Adults: private chef dinner on the terrace OR babysitter on staff for a dinner out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Costa Rica a good family vacation destination?
Yes – one of the best in Central America for families. Safe, English-spoken, no time-zone change from most of North America, calm Pacific beaches, easy wildlife sightings (sloths, monkeys, turtles), and a strong villa scene that beats most family resorts on value. Tamarindo specifically is walkable and family-friendly.
What is the best age to take kids to Costa Rica?
There is no bad age, but 4-12 is the easiest. Babies (0-2) work great in villa-mode with a nap-aware itinerary (see below). Toddlers (2-4) do well at calm beaches and mangrove tours. Kids 6+ can surf, snorkel, ride horses, do half-day adventure tours. Teens lean into the full activity menu – fishing, catamaran, ATV.
Can we go to Costa Rica with a baby or toddler?
Yes – and we have a separate adapted itinerary built around nap windows below. The villa-based, in-villa-chef, in-villa-massage setup actually works better for families with young kids than a resort.
Where should we stay for a family trip?
A private luxury villa with 4-5 bedrooms, pool, and full concierge (us) beats a hotel or resort almost every time for groups of 4+. See Casa Cheetah as our flagship example, or browse all villas.
Is Tamarindo safe for families?
Yes – one of the safest beach towns in Costa Rica. Standard precautions: rip currents (swim near other people), strong sun, hot pavement for bare feet. Tamarindo is walkable and the boutique villa areas (Langosta especially) are quiet and family-friendly.
How much does a Costa Rica family vacation cost?
A 7-day family trip with a 4-5 BR villa, all transfers, all activities, chef dinners, and concierge runs roughly $8,000 to $20,000 total for a family of 4-6 (in addition to flights). Lower if you skip the chef nights or pick a smaller villa. Mid-range hotel + activities for the same family runs $4,000 to $8,000.
What is the best month for a Costa Rica family trip?
February through April for sunshine and small surf. June through July is also great – lighter crowds, lower villa rates, mornings sunny with brief afternoon rain. Avoid August-October if your kids hate rain.
Do we need vaccinations or special prep?
No required vaccinations for entry from the US, Canada, or EU. Bring sunscreen (more than you think), bug spray for the jungle days, kids’ medications, and motion sickness chewables if you are doing the catamaran. The water is safe to drink in Tamarindo.
Can the private chef do kid-friendly menus?
Yes – every chef we book runs a parallel kids menu (pasta, simple grilled chicken, fruit plates, kid-safe versions of the adult meal). We confirm dietary preferences and allergies in advance.
What do we do if the kids get sick or hurt?
There is an excellent private clinic in Tamarindo (Coastal Emergency Medical Services / Tamarindo Diria Medical) with English-speaking doctors. We are 5 minutes away and can drive you. Travel insurance is recommended.
