This is the complete 2026 guide to private chefs in Guanacaste, Costa Rica – how it works, what it costs, and how we make the booking part painless.
What is a Costa Rica private chef?
A private chef in Costa Rica is a professional cook who comes to your villa or vacation rental, brings all the groceries, cooks the full meal (breakfast, dinner, multi-course tasting menu), plates and serves at your table, and leaves the kitchen spotless. Most are licensed local chefs who trained in high-end resorts and went independent. They speak English, accommodate every dietary need, and handle the entire experience for you.

Nut, shellfish, dairy allergies – flag at inquiry, chef builds around it

Low-sodium / heart-healthy – chefs work to it

Booking through us, vs going direct
The private chef scene on this coast is mostly word-of-mouth – the best chefs do not advertise. Booking blind on Instagram is rolling the dice.
We only book through chefs we have personally eaten with – licensed, insured, professional. The advice is free, the booking is free, and the chef price is the same (or less) than booking direct – because we book at local rates. Read why booking with us is free →
Where our chefs cook: town by town
Our chef roster is based along the Tamarindo – Flamingo corridor and covers every town on this stretch of the Guanacaste coast.
Tamarindo & Langosta
The deepest chef bench on the coast – most of our chefs live here. Easiest availability, and off-peak a same-week booking is often possible. See Tamarindo and Playa Langosta.
Flamingo, Brasilito & Potrero
The marina towns. Chefs here shop the morning catch straight off the boats at Marina Flamingo – the best seafood dinners on the coast. See Flamingo and Potrero.
Playa Conchal & Reserva Conchal
Villa and resort community – our chefs cook in Reserva Conchal rentals every week of high season. See Playa Conchal.
Las Catalinas
The car-free town. Your chef arrives with everything and works your villa kitchen – no logistics on your side. See Las Catalinas.
Staying at a villa outside this corridor? A small travel fee can apply – we confirm it before you book, never after.
Private chef vs dinner out: the honest math
For two people, a restaurant usually wins on price. The math flips at around six people. A typical night for a group of 8 adults:
Option
Real cost
What that includes
Good restaurant dinner out
$70 – $100+ / pp
Mains $25 – 45, cocktails $10 – 15 each, then 13 percent tax and a 10 percent service charge added by law, plus golf carts or taxis both ways
Private chef, 3 – 4 courses
$80 – $150 / pp
Groceries, menu built for your group, cooking, table setup, service, and cleanup – and nobody drives anywhere
Same money, but the chef night gets you a menu designed around your table, dinner on your own terrace, and zero end-of-night logistics. Villa groups here book chef dinners as the default and treat eating out as the outing. For the restaurant nights that are worth the trip, see our dining guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Costa Rica private chef?
A private chef in Costa Rica is a professional cook who comes to your villa or vacation rental, brings the groceries, cooks a full meal (breakfast, dinner, multi-course tasting), serves you, and leaves the kitchen clean. Most are licensed local chefs who have worked at high-end resorts and gone independent. They speak English, they can accommodate any dietary need, and they handle the whole experience so you do not lift a finger.
How much does a private chef cost in Costa Rica?
Breakfast runs $25 to $50 per person. A casual dinner is $50 to $100 per person. A 3 to 4 course dinner is $80 to $150 per person. A tasting menu (5 to 7 courses) is $150 to $250 per person. Wedding and large events are quoted custom. All prices typically include groceries, service, and cleanup.
Do they provide the groceries, or do I shop?
The chef provides everything – all groceries, ingredients, oils, spices, wine pairing recommendations (you usually supply the wine). They shop at local markets the morning of service to get freshest catch and produce. You do nothing.
What can a Costa Rica private chef cook?
Anything from fresh Pacific seafood (the local specialty – mahi, tuna, snapper, shrimp), Tico fusion, plant-based and vegan tasting menus, Latin BBQ and asado, themed events (sushi night, paella, taco bar), and dedicated kids menus. Tell us what you want at booking and we match you to the chef whose style fits.
Can they accommodate vegan, gluten-free, or allergies?
Yes – this coast has strong plant-based chefs. Vegan multi-course tasting menus are common. Gluten-free, dairy-free, nut allergies, kids menus, pregnancy-safe options – flag at inquiry and the chef builds the menu around it.
How far ahead should I book a private chef?
Two weeks is comfortable for most dinners. Peak season (December through April) and special-occasion chefs can book out four to six weeks ahead. Same-week is sometimes possible but limits which chef you can get.
Do they bring dishes, linens, and glassware?
Most chefs bring their own dishes, linens, glasses, and serving ware – especially for tasting menus and special events. For more casual dinners, they often use your villa kitchen. We confirm before booking.
How much should I tip a private chef?
15 to 20 percent of the total bill, in cash, at the end of the meal. If a sous chef or server is helping, they share the tip.
Can I have a private chef for an event – bachelorette, wedding, birthday?
Yes – custom themed events are common. Bachelorette menus, sunset picnics, sushi or paella stations, wedding catering for 20 to 100 guests – we have chefs for each. The bigger the event, the further ahead we book (4 to 8 weeks for weddings).
Do you mark up the price?
No. We are paid a small referral fee directly by the chef from their normal price. You pay the chef the same rate you would pay if you booked direct – often less, because we book at local rates instead of tourist rates.
Which towns do your private chefs serve?
Tamarindo, Langosta, Flamingo, Brasilito, Potrero, Playa Conchal and Reserva Conchal, Las Catalinas, and the villas in between. The roster is based along the Tamarindo – Flamingo corridor; for villas farther out a small travel fee can apply, confirmed before you book.
Is a private chef worth it compared to eating out?
For groups of six or more, yes on price alone. A good dinner out in Tamarindo lands at $70 to $100 per person once the 13 percent tax, the 10 percent service charge, and transport are counted. A multi-course chef dinner at your villa runs $80 to $150 all-in. For couples it is less about the math and more about the occasion.
