Costa Rica honeymoon couple on the beach at sunset - Pacific Guanacaste coast

A Costa Rica honeymoon, run like a private itinerary instead of a resort schedule. Seven days on the Pacific Guanacaste coast – your own beach-side villa with pool, in-villa private chef nights, a sunset catamaran charter just for the two of you, a couples spa, a private beach picnic, and one adventure day. Direct flight into Liberia (LIR), private transfer, one English-speaking contact on the ground. $8K to $25K all-in for two. This is the full itinerary.

The short version

Beach-side villa with a pool beats any honeymoon resort room. Private chef on the terrace beats any all-inclusive buffet. A whole-boat sunset catamaran beats a tour-boat seat. We book it all in one package, one bill, one contact – Jenny – in Tamarindo year-round. The itinerary below is the most-booked template; we customize every day.

Why Guanacaste for a Costa Rica honeymoon

Direct flight, then sand

LIR (Liberia) is the closest international airport to the Guanacaste honeymoon coast. From the gate to your villa pool is under 60 minutes. No domestic transfers, no jungle puddle-jumpers.
Villa + private chef beats any all-inclusive

For the price of two rooms at a beach resort you get a full villa with a pool, ocean view, and a chef who cooks dinner for the two of you on the terrace. Privacy, custom menus, and zero buffet line.
Dry season is reliable

December through April: sunshine, low humidity, sunset on the Pacific every night. The honeymoon-postcard season is locked in.
Adventure on tap, romance on demand

You can do a sunset catamaran charter and a couples massage on the same day. Surf at 8am, in-villa chef at 7pm. The coast supports either rhythm.

Beach villa & private chef beats an all-inclusive resort

The villa-plus-chef model is the entire reason to do a Costa Rica honeymoon this way. Here is the side-by-side.

Beach-side villa + private chef (PlayaCR) All-inclusive honeymoon resort
Whole house, your own pool, ocean view, your music Hotel room, shared pool, shared everything
Chef cooks a 4-course tasting menu on your terrace Buffet or set restaurant menu, you walk to it
Custom every day – sleep in, change plans, swap days Resort schedule, restaurant slots, activity desk lines
Local concierge + direct vendor pricing Concierge desk that resells third-party tours at markup
$8K – $25K total for the week, all-in $6K – $30K+ for two rooms + tours + drinks
You meet locals + see the real coast You meet other tourists at the swim-up bar

The 7-day itinerary, day by day

This is the most-booked template. Every day is swappable, every block is optional. We customize.

Day 1

Arrive Liberia · private transfer · villa welcome

Direct flight into LIR, private transfer waiting (no rental car). Sixty minutes later you are at your villa with a chilled glass of something cold, the pool ready, and dinner sorted. We pre-stock the kitchen so day-one is a soft landing – no grocery run. Sunset on the terrace.
Day 2

Slow morning · couples spa · private chef night

Breakfast in bed (we arrange it with the housekeeper the night before). Late morning at the villa pool. Afternoon: a couples massage at a beachfront spa – side-by-side tables under a palapa, frangipani, ocean soundtrack. Back to the villa. Evening: private chef arrives at 6:30pm, cooks a 4-course dinner for the two of you on the terrace, candles, the works.

Day 3

Sunset catamaran charter (just the two of you)

Sleep in. Late morning swim. We pick you up at 1:30pm for the headline experience: a half-day private catamaran charter from Flamingo – whole boat, just for you. Snorkel stop in a quiet cove, swim, fresh ceviche on board, then anchor at sunset with cocktails. Back at the marina by dark. Casual dinner at the villa.
Day 4

Beach day · private beach picnic

Choose your beach (Conchal for the shells, Playa Penca for the empty crescent, Playa Danta for the village vibe). We set up a private beach picnic for two at lunch – linen, umbrella, charcuterie board, chilled wine, fresh fruit. You read, swim, nap. Sunset dinner at a beach-side restaurant we book ahead.

Adventure day – your choice

One day for the adrenaline option, scaled to your taste. Options: half-day inshore sport fishing charter (rooster fish, mahi, sailfish in season), Rincon de la Vieja volcano + waterfall combo, sunset horseback ride on the beach, or a ziplining + hot springs day. Or skip it entirely and stay at the villa. We pick the operator, you pick the day.
Day 6

Restaurant takeover night (private booking)

Slow morning, breakfast on the terrace. Optional surf lesson at Playa Grande or Tamarindo (you-and-the-instructor private setup). Afternoon at the villa. The evening is the cinematic finale: a reserved table at one of the gold-coast fine-dining rooms (Marina Flamingo, Las Catalinas, Tamarindo) – chef-curated tasting menu, marina or ocean view, the dress-up night of the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is Costa Rica a good honeymoon destination?
Yes – one of the most balanced honeymoon destinations in the Americas. Direct international flights into Liberia (LIR), no language barrier on the tourist coast, dry-season weather is locked in December-April, the Pacific Guanacaste coast has 30+ beaches inside an hour’s drive, and the villa-plus-private-chef model is more privately romantic than any all-inclusive resort can offer. Sunset is on the Pacific – every evening.
What is the best time of year for a Costa Rica honeymoon?
Dry season is December through April – low humidity, sunshine, Pacific sunsets, full vendor availability. Peak inside that window is mid-December to mid-January (book 6-8 months ahead). May and November are shoulder months – cheaper, often still gorgeous, occasional afternoon shower. June through October is green season – tropical, lush, less crowded, real risk of rain in the afternoons.
How much does a Costa Rica honeymoon cost?
$8K to $25K total for two people, one week, all-in (flights not included). Mid-range ($10K-15K): four-bedroom villa with pool, two chef nights, one catamaran charter, two spa appointments, one adventure day, transfers. Higher end ($18K-25K+): premium villa with full staff, custom photographer, daily yoga, additional private experiences. Budget shoulder ($8K-10K): smaller villa, fewer extras, dry season but not Christmas.
Should we do beach or rainforest for a Costa Rica honeymoon?
Honest answer: do the beach. Guanacaste’s Pacific coast (Tamarindo, Flamingo, Conchal, Las Catalinas, Langosta) gives you reliable dry-season weather, the easiest international access (LIR), the gold-standard sunset, beach-side villa supply, and the private-chef + catamaran charter infrastructure. If you really want the cloud-forest tone, do a two-day add-on to Monteverde or Arenal – but anchor the trip on the beach.
What is the best area in Costa Rica for a honeymoon?
Pacific Guanacaste, north of Tamarindo. Flamingo, Las Catalinas, Conchal, Potrero, and Brasilito form a 20-minute cluster of beachfront villa communities with the best dry-season weather, the calmest swim beaches, sport-fishing and catamaran fleets in Marina Flamingo, and the gold-coast restaurant scene. Tamarindo itself is great if you want walkable nightlife. Langosta is the quieter neighbor.
How long should a Costa Rica honeymoon be?
Seven nights is the sweet spot. Five works if your flight window is tight (cut Day 5 adventure or Day 6 dressy night). Ten nights lets you add a 2-day Arenal volcano leg or extend at the villa. Less than five and you spend half the trip in transit and never settle in.
Can you arrange a vow renewal or symbolic ceremony?
Yes – sunset beach ceremony with officiant, two-bouquet floral setup, photographer, champagne toast on the sand. Typical add-on $1,200-2,800 depending on scale. Most couples do it on Day 4 or Day 6 of the itinerary. Tell us when you inquire.
Do we need a rental car for a Costa Rica honeymoon?
No – and most of our honeymoon couples skip it. We arrange airport transfers and a private driver for any day-trip outings. A rental car on the gold coast is a hassle (parking at beach access, no GPS in places) and a private driver is more romantic and lets you both drink at dinner. If you want one for a single day to roam, we book it.
What if it rains during our honeymoon?
In dry season (December-April) the rain risk is minimal. In green season (June-October), rain typically falls in 1-2 hour bursts late afternoon – mornings are usually sunny. We design itineraries with rain backups: spa day, chef day, indoor cooking class, gallery visit, hot-springs trip. Catamaran charters do get rebooked if weather is real, and we handle that for you – no charge.
How far in advance should we book a Costa Rica honeymoon?
For peak dry season (December-April): 4-6 months ahead is comfortable. For Christmas + New Year honeymoons: 6-9 months. For green season (June-October): 2-3 months works in most cases. We start with the villa availability – that’s the bottleneck, not the activities.
