By Jenny & the local PlayaCR team· Updated 2026·Guanacaste, Costa Rica
A Costa Rica long weekend – the tight 4-night format for working travelers who can’t take a full week. Direct flight into Liberia (LIR) Thursday night, beach-side villa Friday morning, private catamaran charter Saturday, in-villa chef night Sunday, home Monday afternoon. Pacific Guanacaste coast. $4K to $14K all-in depending on villa caliber. This is the itinerary, the timing, and the math.
The short version
Thursday flight, beach Friday, catamaran Saturday, chef night Sunday, home Monday. Two beach days, two marquee experiences, three good dinners, zero logistics on your end. The most-asked-for short trip – and the format that actually leaves you rested instead of needing-a-vacation-from-your-vacation.

Why a Costa Rica long weekend works
LIR is a direct flight from a lot of US cities
Liberia gets direct nonstops from Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, Newark, Philadelphia, and others – typically 4-5 hours from the east coast and Gulf, 5-6 from the Midwest, and a single connection from the west. You can leave work Thursday night and be in a pool Friday morning.
Customs is fast, transfers are 60 minutes
LIR is small, friendly, and easy. From wheels-down to villa pool is under 90 minutes with a private transfer waiting. No domestic flight, no jungle road. You actually start the trip.
Four days is enough to reset
Two full beach days, one private experience, one good dinner and one tasting menu. That is the formula. You come home Tuesday genuinely rested – not the “I need a vacation from my vacation” kind.
No rental car, no logistics, no decisions
We pre-book the villa, the transfers, the boat, the chef, the restaurants. You arrive with one piece of paper. Long weekends are the worst format to wing.
The four-day formula
What makes a 4-night Costa Rica trip work (vs come home exhausted).
Get out the door fast
Land Thursday late evening, in the pool Friday morning. No fly day burned.
No domestic flight or road day
LIR is the airport. Sixty minutes to the villa. Beach is 8 minutes from there.
Two marquee experiences, one tasting menu
Catamaran charter + pick-your-day + chef night. Enough memory for the long weekend, not so much you need recovery.
Everything pre-booked
Villa, transfers, boat, chef, restaurants. You arrive with one printed itinerary.
The 4-day Costa Rica long weekend itinerary
Thursday flight in, Monday flight out. This is the most-booked sequence.
Thursday eve
Late flight in · villa arrival
Most travelers depart their home airport Thursday late afternoon and land at LIR by 8-10pm. Private transfer waiting, sixty minutes to the villa – we leave the porch light on, beds turned down, a chilled welcome bottle in the fridge. Quick swim, sleep. Trip starts at 7am tomorrow.
Friday
Beach day · ceviche lunch · sunset cocktails
Slow morning – breakfast on the terrace from the housekeeper. Late morning at Playa Conchal or Playa Danta (we pick the empty one based on the day). Lunch at a beach restaurant – ceviche, fresh-caught fish, casado plates. Pool afternoon. Sunset cocktails on the terrace – we send a bartender for the golden hour. Casual dinner in.
Saturday
Private catamaran charter · sunset dinner out
The marquee day. Whole-boat private catamaran from Marina Flamingo at 11am – just your group. Anchor in a snorkel cove, full lunch on board, swim, then sunset off Playa Conchal. Back at the marina by 5:30. Dinner that night at a gold-coast fine-dining restaurant we book ahead (Marina Flamingo, Tamarindo, or Las Catalinas – dressy night).
Sunday
Pick your day · chef tasting menu night
Choose what kind of day you want. Surf lesson at Playa Grande (cleaner break than Tamarindo). Couples or group spa at a beachfront palapa. Half-day inshore sport fishing charter. Or skip everything and stay at the villa. Mid-afternoon back at the villa. Chef night: 4-course tasting menu on the terrace – the headline meal of the weekend.
Monday
Slow morning · departure
Breakfast in bed if you want it. Late checkout. Private transfer to LIR for the early afternoon flight – back to your home airport in time to sleep in your own bed. (Or extend to Tuesday and we add a final beach morning + lunch out before the flight.)
Two ways to long-weekend
Couples Long Weekend
For one couple. 3 nights, villa-light, dining-heavy.
Smaller boutique villa or hotel suite.
One catamaran charter.
Two restaurant nights, one in-villa chef night.
Optional couples spa.
Group Long Weekend
For 4-8 friends. 4 nights, one bigger villa, more action.
Four-bedroom villa with pool.
Whole-boat catamaran charter.
One surf morning + one chef tasting night.
One restaurant takeover dinner (small buyout option).
Yes – and for US travelers it is one of the better short-haul long-weekend destinations. Direct nonstop flights into Liberia (LIR) from a dozen US cities, no time zone shift to speak of, 60-minute transfer to a Pacific beach villa, English-speaking concierge on the ground. Most travelers depart Thursday late afternoon and return Monday early afternoon – 3 full days on the sand plus arrival/departure halves. Four nights total.
How many days do you need for a Costa Rica trip?
Three nights is the floor. Four nights is comfortable. Five is the sweet spot if you can swing it. Anything less than three and you spend more time in transit than on the beach. For a true long weekend (Thursday-Monday), the 4-night format below is the most-booked.
Best Costa Rica long weekend itinerary?
The most-booked formula: Thursday night arrival, Friday beach day with sunset cocktails, Saturday private catamaran charter and a dressy restaurant night, Sunday pick-your-day (surf, spa, fishing) and a private chef tasting menu, Monday slow morning and afternoon flight home. That sequence gives you two beach days, two big experiences, three good dinners, and zero logistical decisions.
Can we do a Costa Rica trip in 3 days?
Yes, but compress the formula. Arrival Friday morning (not Thursday evening) – which means a daytime flight that day. Beach day Friday, marquee day Saturday (catamaran + chef night), Sunday slow morning and afternoon flight. You lose the pick-your-day Sunday and one beach day, but you keep the headline experiences. We tighten the itinerary for clients who only have the weekend.
What does a Costa Rica long weekend cost?
For two people, 4 nights all-in: $4K-8K including villa, transfers, chef night, catamaran charter, restaurants, pre-stocked kitchen. For 4 friends, 4 nights in a larger villa: $7K-14K total ($1.7K-3.5K per person). Flights are separate. We can scale the villa caliber up or down depending on budget.
What is the closest international airport to the Pacific Costa Rica beaches?
Liberia International (LIR). It is on the north Pacific side of the country and serves the Guanacaste coast (Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, Flamingo, Las Catalinas, Langosta). All of those beaches are 50-75 minutes from LIR by private transfer. The other international airport (SJO in San Jose) is on the central highland and adds a 4-hour drive or domestic flight to reach the Pacific coast – which is why long-weekend trips fly into LIR.
Do we need a rental car for a long weekend?
No – and we recommend against it for short trips. Pickup at LIR usually takes 45+ minutes once you factor in shuttle, insurance upsell, paperwork. Private transfer is faster, more comfortable, and lets you drink at the restaurant nights. We add a private driver for any restaurant nights or outings.
What about jet lag or time zones?
Costa Rica is in CST year-round (no DST). For most US travelers there is zero or one hour of time difference. No jet lag. You hit the ground running.
Best time of year for a Costa Rica long weekend?
December through April is dry season – high reliability for outdoor plans. Specifically: any weekend in February or March is gold. November can be rainy on the front end, December and January are peak (book early), April is hot but dry. May-October has more rain risk but is much cheaper – if you have flexibility, a shoulder-season long weekend can be a steal.
How far in advance should we book a long weekend?
For peak dry season (mid-Dec through Mar): 8-12 weeks ahead is comfortable. For shoulder season: 4-6 weeks works. We can sometimes do something inside 2 weeks if dates are very flexible, but villa selection narrows fast.
