Flamingo is the right base when the plan is a house, a pool and a beach where young kids can swim. The white sand at Playa Flamingo drops into water that stays calmer than Tamarindo most of the year, and the hillside behind it holds this coast’s best stock of large private villas, many with sunset views toward the Catalinas islands. Kids under 8 do better in Flamingo, teens do better in Tamarindo. Small kids get calm water, a pool at the house and quiet early nights. Teenagers would rather take the surf lesson and wander somewhere with people to watch. Multi-generation groups almost always land on the Flamingo side, because that is where the 6 to 10 bedroom houses with private pools and room to spread out are.
